DIY Home Recycling Program

For those who have recycling bins, we always ask that you use the appropriate bins and prevent any trash and debris from ending up in our storm drains and ultimately the ocean. However, not everyone is lucky enough to live in an area where recycling is regularly picked up. If you find yourself in this situation, here is a simple DIY home recycling program.

Step 1: Purchase/secure your materials
Materials needed:

  • 4 – wooden crates
    • o You can purchase these from a craft store, thrift store, or even find them around your house or source them from a business. If you can’t find crates like these at stores, make your own with scraps of wood or old pallets.
  • 4 – tubes of paint
    • Pick fun, engaging colors that are going to help you stay on track!
  • Paint brush
  • Alphabet stencils

Step 2: Paint each crate a different color.
You may need to apply more than one coat. Let them dry.

Step 3: Once dry, place the appropriate letter stencils and use white paint to create the proper words.

  • Bottles
  • Cans
  • Paper
  • Cardboard

Step 4: Find a place for your crates to stand where you and your family won’t forget about them.
It’s best to keep your recycling crates near your rubbish bin in order to complete all of your recycling disposal at one time.

Step 5: Recycle!
When your bins begin to fill up, find a recycling center near you. Be sure to recycle the right materials at the appropriate locations.
