The production, widespread distribution, and use of single-use plastics is a serious environmental concern. Because single-use plastics are so easily discarded, they often end up as litter on our streets and sidewalks. This build-up of litter eventually makes its way into our storm drains and, eventually, into our oceans, rivers, and streams, which is a threat to both environmental and human health. As we grapple with the consequences of single-use plastics, consider the planet when hosting your next event. A low-waste party allows us to celebrate life’s momentous occasions in both a fun and sustainable way. Here are some tips to keep your upcoming festivities free of trash:
- Keep decor simple: Embrace simple, sustainable, and reusable decorations. Traditional party items, like balloons, often end up as harmful litter. Instead, opt for reusable decorations made from fabric or recycled materials. For example, substitute plastic confetti with biodegradable alternatives like small leaves or recycled paper. This ensures that you are making the least impact on the environment—even down to the littlest detail.
- Buy local: Serving food produced or grown locally is an easy eco-conscious swap. Try to buy in bulk to reduce the amount of plastic packaging. Local grocery items typically have simpler packaging compared to store-bought items. Shopping locally also reduces the distance products have to travel, supporting your own communities and the planet simultaneously.
- Make a plan for leftover food scraps: Food is the centerpiece of many gatherings, but it is vital to be mindful of what happens to the leftovers. Set up a compost bin to divert food scraps from the landfill. Not only does composting reduce waste, but it also creates nutrient-rich soil for future use. Separating waste into compostable and combustible trash allows for a cleaner footprint.
- Make sustainable and reusable swaps: Parties often result in a ton of waste, but that does not have to be the case! Encouraging guests to BYOW (bring your own water bottle), swapping disposable napkins with washable cloths, and using reusable plates instead of foam can greatly reduce the waste associated with gatherings. If you are hosting a large party and do not have space to store extra plates, napkins, and utensils, look for biodegradable products to use instead.
As we navigate life’s celebrations, it is important to consider the impact of our choices and strive for a low-waste lifestyle. Embracing simple yet impactful zero-waste strategies can minimize waste and leave a positive footprint on the environment.
