Zero-Waste Picnic Essentials

It’s almost summer here in Hawaii and picnics are a great way to take advantage of our beautiful weather! With so many public beaches and parks, it’s easy to plan a fun outdoor dining experience. Unfortunately, picnics can sometimes produce waste that ends up getting blown away or tossed into places it shouldn’t be. It’s important for us to do everything in our power to protect and preserve our islands’ beaches and parks for future generations.

One way we can help is by reducing the amount of trash we produce and properly disposing of our waste. The next time you head out for a picnic, consider bringing these eco-friendly essentials to keep all of our favorite spots free of trash!

  1. Silicone Food Storage Bags. These are perfect for snacks and sandwiches, and replace single-use plastic storage bags. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes so you can bring all your favorite foods.

  1. Reusable Containers or Plates. If you’re bringing food from home, remember to pack reusable containers and plates. These are a great substitute for foam and paper plates, and containers make it easy to pack any leftovers!

  1. Eco-friendly Water Bottles, Cups, and Jugs. If you’re eating or playing in the hot sun, you’ll want to stay hydrated. Instead of buying canned and bottled water, soda, or juice, serve beverages in a large jug with a dispenser and have guests use their reusable cups. Many drinks come in concentrated forms that can be diluted in water for an easy and cost-effective way to serve a big group.

  1. Reusable Cutlery. Have all of your guests bring their own reusable forks, chopsticks and/or spoons from home. These are small enough to fit in most bags and won’t fly away like those made of single-use plastic.

Whether you decide to bring these eco-friendly essentials with you or not, the most important thing to remember is whatever you pack in, you must pack out. Let’s always aim to leave spaces better than we found them and work towards a Trash Free Hawaii!
