Every Day Is Earth Day!

Join us in celebrating the beauty of our planet this Earth Day, while learning new ways to go green all 365 days of the year! On April 22, 2025, communities around the world will come together to show the Earth some extra aloha.

Earth Day was established in April 1970 by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson to raise awareness about environmental issues. After learning about the harmful impact of human activities on the atmosphere, oceans, and land, Senator Nelson saw the need for an educational day to address these problems. His urgency was heightened when he witnessed a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, which underscored the need for immediate action.

Together with college student activist Denis Hayes, they organized a campus teach-in and brought their idea to the public eye. Thus, Earth Day was born!

For over 50 years, Earth Day has served as a reminder of our responsibility to protect the planet. Whether through picking up trash and micro-plastics or planting trees in your own yard, there are numerous ways you, your family, and your friends can make an impact!

With the rising effects of climate change, overconsumption, and continued pollution, it is more important than ever to take action. As kamaʻāina, it is our kuleana to take care of the land from mauka to makai. The ʻāina provides us with sustenance, beauty, and a deep connection to our home. To ensure it will be around for generations to come, consider these simple yet effective tips:

  • Turn off the tap to conserve water
  • Fix household water leaks to prevent waste
  • Recycle whenever possible
  • Dispose of chemical products properly
  • Pick up pet waste to prevent water contamination
  • Start composting to reduce food waste
  • Participate in community cleanups

When celebrating Earth Day this year, remember that we are stewards of the land every day. For more tips, visit https://www.stormwaterhawaii.com/resources/what-you-can-do/.
